Who is Sarah Collins?

I am a self-taught, contemporary abstract painter. I have always had a deep love of colour and large-scale expressive artwork and my practice is centred on the exploration of internal feeling states and the physical properties of my materials. I adore acrylic and inks as a medium; for both their vividness of colour and the speed at which they allow me to work - meaning I can find a state of flow and create artwork intuitively. As a professional Art Psychotherapist, I am also trained to create emotionally-attuned art, meaning it is natural for my artworks to intuitively capture the essence of what I am feeling at that time - guided by the colours I use and movement of my brushstrokes. These things help me to strike a balance between spontaneity and intentional depth through my work.

My work often begins with fluid mediums (ink and acrylic) which establish the emotional tone and warmth of each piece through their inherent unpredictability. These liquid foundations are then layered with dry mediums, including charcoal, pastel, oil stick, chalk and pencil. These elements introduce friction and tension, allowing me to accentuate specific areas of the work and create a sense of depth which contrasts with the initial washes of colour.

The creative process for me is intuitive, guided by the movement of the brush and the spontaneous behaviour of the materials on the canvas. Rather than following a predetermined concept, I allow the textures and colours to evolve into immersive compositions that reflect a specific moment or mood.

I believe the purpose of art is to both convey and connect with the human experience. As such, I am guided to make artwork which makes the viewer feel something; alive, inspired, joy, identification, immersion or indeed, awe.

Thank you so much for checking out my work - I would love to hear your feedback as well as any ideas you have for commissions!
