Colourful abstract art to fill every space

This small piece went through multiple iterations, before later being smothered in creamy, pink paint, leaving the viewer with just a peek at what remains of its previous editions. Originally, titled “What’s Underneath”, I later realised that, completely by coincidence, the marks made in charcoal spell out the word “Joy”. This leaves the piece with a wonderful, uplifting metaphor relating to finding joy in unexpected places, when one looks carefully at the foundations. I think this would make a wonderful addition to any space where the viewer will be reminded to look for the joy in the everyday.

This painting emerged from a love of colour and an exploration of my favourite palette; pinks, blues and turquoises. It feels soft but absorbing and moreish at the same time. My favourite section is the area of orange ink juxtaposed next to the hot pink and blue-violet acrylic colours. This piece feels really joyous and immersive to me; it is a celebration of colours for the simple enjoyment of them and the pleasure of having something beautiful and captivating to look at. It reminds me of scuba diving and of exploring a coral reef and the beautiful tropical colours that can be found in nature, if one only looks under the surface.
